Success in the Mount Everest Challenge

by admin on 23 June, 2009

Successful endurance team members and Inner Flame volunteersOn 20th – 21st June 2009, 10 young people achieved their goal to climb a 29 foot pole 1000 times inside 24 hours – the equivalent height of Mount Everest at Keynes Country Park near Cirencester. In fact, they smashed their target, achieving the "summit" in less than 15 1/2 hours, and continued to 1168 climbs.

The team was drawn mainly from participants on Inner Flame’s first residential course. So keen was Helen (13) to complete the 1000th ascent that she undertook 30 consecutive climbs to achieve that! Jamie Wreathall (the youngest member of the team at the age of 12) set the record for the most number of climbs (200) and highest number of consecutive climbs (44).

This was a real team effort of different abilities (none are regular climbers) and was a huge challenge. They coped with it admirably.

At the same time, members of the public and supporters supported the event by having a go themselves. The weekend produced many memorable moments as people (some as young as 5) conquered their fear of heights.
