Wiltshire charity, Inner Flame, has launched an exciting new event, the “Mount Everest Challenge”. This involves up to 200 local people climbing a 29ft pole in relay, 1000 times in 24 hours – the height of Mount Everest. It is happening on the weekend of 20-21 June at Head 4 Heights in the Cotswold Water Park (between Swindon and Cirencester).

As part of the event, an “endurance” team of 10 young people (half of them from Inner Flame’s first course) will attempt to set a new world record, climbing continuously as far as they can in 24 hours.

Inner Flame is a new charity to inspire young people to reach their full potential. Having recently run its first residential course, which was a great success, Inner Flame hopes to give the opportunity to 20 more local teenagers at the end of August. This event is to fundraise to give them this opportunity.

The Mount Everest Challenge is suitable for individuals, families and company teams, and registration is now open. David Wreathall, co-founder of Inner Flame said: “We want everyone to have a go. My father climbed these poles at the age of 70, and my son, who is 12, is the youngest member of the endurance team”. The climb is challenging but achievable.

Two local record-breaking climbers offered their support for the event.

If so, that’s a GOOD thing!

Fear of heights is a healthy and natural thing. It stops (most of) us jumping off tall buildings and hurting ourselves.

Overcoming a fear of heights is also what gives you the "buzz" when you climb, abseil, parachute etc. Without it, the Mount Everest Challenge would be less exciting.

If you’re scared of heights, you might find any of these excuses handy: "I can’t", "I couldn’t". You might even believe yourself. Go on, tempt us - say it!

We’ll have qualified coaches at the event who specialise in building confidence and overcoming fears and phobias. If you let us know in advance, we’ll plan a few minutes of 1-1 time with you, to help to overcome that fear.

How would you feel going through life carrying a fear around, which you just MIGHT be able to conquer in a half an hour?

How will you feel if you prove that you CAN master your fear. Admire the view from 29ft up. Listen to those cheers from your supporters now!

The best bit of all? Seeing the look on the faces of friends and family who said that you COULDN’T do it (even if they secretly hoped that you would).

Head 4 Heights works strictly on the basis of "challenge by choice", which means you won’t be forced to do anything. As long as you achieve more than you thought you could, we’ll all be happy.

We hope you rise to the challenge.

On Sunday 21st June, as we near the end of our 24 hours, there’s a triathlon happening at the same venue, which will add to the buzz of the day. See http://www.votwo.co.uk/votwo2007/events-and-adventure/race_view.php?i=77

If you’re here watching the triathlon and fancy a challenge of your own (or even if you’ve finished the triathlon and aren’t quite tired enough yet!), please enquire about making a climb (in return for a small donation to Inner Flame). This is subject to availability, as our sponsored climbers will take preference.

And, of course, any Mount Everest Challenge participants who fancy a quick swim/bike/run after their climb, go online to register for the triathlon! We’d join in ourselves, but I suspect that we might not be in a peak state after climbing all night…

We were joined by Rachel Elnaugh (who built Red Letter Days from scratch, and was an original dragon in Dragons Den) and Christine Hamilton (you’ll remember Christine from I’m a Celebrity…). We’d like to thank them for showing their support for young people, and for Menzies, our sponsors for the evening.
