Welcome to the Mount Everest Challenge website. The first challenge was held at… yes, the Cotswold Water Park!
What’s it about?
On 20th – 21st June 2009, ten young people came to the Cotswold Water Park (between Swindon and Cirencester) to take part in an exciting personal and team challenge event, joined by local members of the public and visitors to the Cotswold Country Park and Beach.
Rather than fly to the Himalayas, we took the safer and more convenient option of climbing a 29 foot pole, 1000 times in 24 hours (in relay – not individually!). That’s the equivalent of the height of Everest! It all happened at Head 4 Heights, the UK’s fastest growing Aerial Adventure Centre.
Why?
Apart from the buzz of conquering our fear of heights, the event funds young people to take part in "Fire Me Up!", a challenging 4-day personal development course from new Wiltshire-based educational charity, Inner Flame. More details can be found at www.innerflame.org.uk.
Who can take part?
Almost everyone aged 5 to 105 (minimum height 1.1m). The good news is it’s a relay – you can climb once or 5 times – you don’t have to do 1000 climbs on your own! If you’re afraid of heights, come and conquer that fear with our help.
This event is particularly suitable for:
- Teenagers with their friends or family – especially those who are keen to take the 3am slot!
- Company teams, gyms and sports clubs. See our Teams page for details of how you can use this for team building and fun.
What next?
The challenge was such a success that we’re already planning next year’s event. The format is yet to be finalised; we are considering a challenge between an Inner Flame team of young people and a team from the event sponsor… ideas on a postcard please. We’ll also welcome involvement from local schools in Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.
